I am a mountain tortoise... I have never been to Tao's or even seen the advertisement. The girls were sniggly about the late night advertisements of the waiter (or is he the manager) in it. The service was GOOD which make the dinner experience even more enjoyable.
For the mountain tortoise like me :P Tao's offer a seven course dinner. While some items are fixed, items like salad, drink, main course and dessert can be picked.
Let the pictures do the talking..
I love almost any kind of mushrooms and these two dishes satisfied my palate. I especially like the soup which was creamy and yet the taste wasn't overpowering. The grilled mushroom was garlicky and just the way I like it.
We each ordered a main course and sampled each other's. I must say I enjoyed my choice of a prime rib eye steak the most. The steak was cooked beautifully and the meat was tender and juicy. D's fish was good too. Crispy skin (not easy to cook) and tasted fresh. L's lamb was alright, but just my least fave among the three main courses.
I didn't try the rest of the dessert except for my green tea cheese cake which wasn't that great. Texture was on the hard side and green tea taste overpowered the cheese.
Verdict
I will definitely visit the place again. Like their service. Food was good. You can tell that the restaurant takes pride and put its heart into the cooking.
Last but not least. Photos with the girls and a fussy baby.
If not for the fact that I watch my eggs intake, I can have roti prata everyday! The cravings for these flattened fiend started when I was in my last trimester, preggy with Alex. Many months down the road, and I still got to have my roti prata fixes every week. It's best eaten when it's piping hot and the curry must be good too. I like mine especially with eggs and mozzarella cheese.
Hubb and I have a little prata routine now. Every Saturday morning we'll visit AMK hub, with bb in tow to have a prata breakfast. I love my pratas chewy and hubb likes his crispy. Only good pratas for me, mind you. So the best of the both world for us is found at the Ah Mei cafe on the 2nd floor.
I had some craving for prata last night. My very nice bil bought from this shop near our place. It's the last time I will eat them, coz there's nothing fantastic about prata and curry, and the fact that I took a risk to eat from the shop that I had food poisoning the last time I ate their food. Haizzz.
Anyway, here's a list of the few places that I like.
- Ah mei cafe at AMK hub. Standard varies for different brancbes
- The prata shop along Upper Thomson Road for their cheese prata. Best I have tried so far.
- Casuarina prata shop also along Upper Thomson Road. Their garlic prata is nice but the rest of the stuff cannot make it.
- Jalan Kayu, the very last shop, Tohirah.
- Fong Seng, near NUS. One of our fave haunt when hubb and I were dating.
So, where's your prata place?
We didn't have the usual BBQ stingray (it's da bomb!) from Chan BBQ coz Andrew is feeling under the weather. He ordered his 2nd choice, Fried Hokkien noddle which was alright. I had my dessert before my main coz the congee from Chai Chee porridge stall was too popular and it's always a long wait. I am not a porridge fan, but I love the century egg porridge. The rice dumpling balls in peanut soup from "15" is also the best I have ever tried. Hubb than called for a Rojak to share. I love digging for pineapple slices and softened dough stick bits among the prawn paste mix.

So this is me at 24 weeks. I think I look smaller than the pic I took back at 19 weeks. Not dressing up just to take the piccie... coz I attended one of my close friend's wedding yesterday (she's finally married!). And I hate the feeling of make up on my face now.
My hubb commented that I am fussy about the food. I beg to differ... What's wrong with having good food that will fill up my tummy nicely and roundly? My stomach has limited space and it's only right to fill it with good food! Read about ieatishootipost's foodie code, which #1, 2, 6, 7 and 8 apply to me!
So here are some places that we have visited recently and which I think is worth sharing and all very affordable! They are in no order of merit...
#1: Tohirah, Jalan Kayu
I like the roti prata served in this restaurant. Chewy... just the way I like it. For me, that's the prata I will have any time. The prata actually inspired me to post a question about roti prata in Facebook... Keke. The restaurant also claims that it's roti pratas are cooked in olive oil. I hope so! Less food guilt on my part! The restaurant also serves great satay. I also see a lot of people trying their curry fish head which I haven't tried yet. If you ever head down to this place, it's next to the public car park and nearest restaurant to the military camp.
#2: Tamako Meal, Casuarina Road
I wanted to have Japanese food last weekend and didn't want to travel too far to satisfied my taste food, so I looked through various food blogs and checked on Japanese food. Friends, this is my secret to have good food, I don't just stumble upon them.
Tamako Meal is a long established and frills-free Japanese family restaurant, which by the way is along the same stretch of shop houses that also serves roti prata (not bad, but oily for me). I had the katsu don which was just so-so for me, but hubb's saba bento set was good. We also ordered their new special, which is some kind of grilled salt water fish and it was so good that my hubb, who usually don't take fish, actually bothered to pay compliment about the dish to the waiter. Their inari and unagi gunkan were also exceptionally excellent. Do try this place~~
#3: Eighteen chef, East point
I read about this small eatery in the ieat blog, and wanted to try it's baked rice since. Too bad we didn't go on Wednesday night, or otherwise we can try it's crab special. What's special about its baked rice is that you can mix and match the sauce to go with the meat/vege of your choice. The grilled fish baked rice (with creamy white sauce) I ordered was good. It wasn't too coy or overpowering tasty and a dish that I relished on a night that I wasn't too hungry. I think baked rice is easy to make... hope to make my own version one day soon. Hubb ordered a lobster aglio olio set. The tomato soup was blasé, but the main course was not disappointing. Where do you get to eat half a lobster in Singapore and incurring less than $20?
I found myself to be excited with tonight's dinner with hubb, that it felt like we were on one of our dates! On the context to celebrate our customary wedding date (it's been 2 years!), he chose a place that I never would have guessed. It turned out that I have had the food before at the restaurant at another location, but this branch is so much better! It's well known that I like my food, but I like variety and small portions. And I like spiced food too. Hmmmm. I was so full that he can't brought me to have dessert. :X
I also bought more clothes earlier today... :X No more clothes!!! (Like real!)
I cooked hubb and myself dinner last night and it's the first time since I have been a SAHW. All went quite well though I forgot to season the patties I made. Haha. I didn't expect cooking a three dish meal would take me such a long time... nearly 3hrs. :O Consider that I could whip up a quick lunch for myself in less than half an hour.
These are simple home made dishes but nevertheless they tasted alright.
Hubb remarked that I have really become domesticated. Haha. Let's see what I have made....
- Soup: corn, onions, carrots, potato, spare ribs n chicken strips. I usually made ABC soup for my lunch and this is a slight twist to ABC soup
- Meat patties: Beef and pork. I forgot to season this but I tried deglazing and made a nice sauce for the patties, so all well is well. +1 point for me for trying deglazing and for the first time successfully!
- Stir-fried tapioca leaves: First time I cooked this vege and it turned out very well. This is hubb's favourite dish out of the three and he's not known to graze!
Tonight's menu is chicken stew. Hope this will turn out successful. I didn't had any luck with the beef stew I made some time back and which I had for 2 days coz I hate to waste food. *cross fingers*
*I must eat when I feel hungry or I turn into some grouchy food monster!
Tuckshop is a very small setting and the menu selection is small as well. Hubb and Nicole ordered the Fish & Chips. I tried a bit and I must say it's rather good. Diana and I had the steak sandwich. As I am avoiding raw food in my diet, I requested for the steak to be well done and it came with some slight pink. While I find the accompanying caeser salad dressing to be slightly overpowering, the.sandwich.was.so.good. Well cooked! Sauteed onion, half a portobello mushroom and a thick chunk of steak. I savoured every bite and morsel of it! Everyone, this is a must try!
